In the OERmuseum, you will embark on a ‘Journey through Time’, from the last Ice Age to the Bronze and Iron Ages. With dioramas, videos and interactive game elements, you will gain a better understanding of who the people were who lived and worked in Drenthe so many years ago. At the OERmuseum, you can get an idea of what the hunting Neanderthal looked like.
Neanderthals got their name from the discovery of a skeleton near the German town of Neanderthal in 1857. Neanderthals are estimated to have lived between 200,000 and 40,000 years ago. They had a stocky and muscular body and a large brain. The Neanderthal was a true carnivore. Besides weapons and tools, Neanderthals also made artefacts. The OERmuseum has an axe that was made during the time of the Neanderthals. We don’t know how Neanderthals used to communicate with each other. It is likely that Neanderthals died out due to rapid climate change, which meant the end of the mammoth and other animals the Neanderthals used to hunt.
The OERmuseum is open from the Easter weekend to the Autumn holidays. And in the Christmas (except for the 25th, 26th and 31st of December and the 1st of January) and Spring holidays, from 13:30 to 17:00 hours Tuesdays to Sundays.
